A printable version of this announcement can be found here.
The historic Popodicon mansion is searching for public sculpture made of concrete for a one-year exhibition in their garden. The garden is home to a range of unique plants and flowers that promote natural insect ecology with a focus on pollinators such as bees and monarch butterflies. The sculpture will be placed in the main circle of the garden acting as a centerpiece and symbol throughout the year. The Popidcon garden hosts many events and receives a significant amount of public exposure.
The call is open to all Shepherd University students to make new work in concrete. Criteria for choosing the proposal are artistic design, feasibility, and context to a public garden setting. The sculpture can range in size, but no taller than 6 feet high and no wider than 4 ft. The proposed sculpture must be able to attach to a concrete base that measures 12”x12” or onto a Doric column style pedestal. Up to 300 lbs of concrete, installation hardware, steel lathe and basic mold materials will be provided. If additional materials beyond this are needed additional funds will need to be raised by the artist. The artist maintains ownership of the piece, which can be reclaimed after one year. Knowledge of concrete is not necessary, advisement on material, structure and fabrication are offered by the FASTEnER Lab.
